in terms of battery size causing trouble, the only trouble you could have here is fitting it on the mounting bracket without it touching the exhaust.
i believe that a cam timing issue would cause problems full time, it sounds as if your trouble is intermittent, is that correct, dedreux? though it cannot hurt to check.
i wonder how many miles are on your '92 and has it spent its life in a mostly hot or mostly cold and wet environment? i have had to replace more wires than i can recall on my own '92 900T (303k miles, life spent in hot south california) due to breakdown of the housing, but more often than not, the break was in the inner wire itself and the housing looked just fine. i would start at the ECU with my shop manual and a multi meter, start running tests from there.
