I've had some friends have their cars royally screwed up by quickie places - same thing that you saw - put engine oil into the transmission. And this was an automatic; the car got a whole 25 miles before it blew up.
With a quickie place, you might get the incompetent guy, or the merely competent one. You never know. My personal opinion (is there any other kind?) is not to use them. I wouldn't go to a Saab dealer - that's gross overkill. What you want to find is a decent independent mechanic that at least knows what a Saab is. Ask around - an oil change is not an emergency procedure, so you can wait a week or two. Ask friends with non-domestic cars. Call up a few places, and ask if they work on Saabs. If nothing else, it's good to establish a relationship with a shop for those jobs that you may not want to tackle. And an oil change is a relatively low-risk way to see if the shop is one you want to deal with.
