The "hard to turn" ignition is a common problem. Common reasons are sugary soda/coffee spills over time, and or dried up lubricant grease below the ignition assembly which causes the gears and levers to not turn freely. Long term solution is to take the shift and ignition console apart, clean out the old sticky grease and replace with new lub. Short of taking the shift console apart, a possible solution is to spray some sort of solvent lubricant such as WD40 into the key hole, then work the key in and out and from off to start. Do that several times with lots of solvent. If it works for a time then you find that it goes back to being sticky, the reason is the old dried lubricant gumming up the works below.
