Tweaking the APC box is perfectly safe as long as you don't defeat the knock sensor by messing with the k potentiometer. Your trans will handle it so long as you don't max boost all the time. Use it when you need it, say when you want to blow the doors off a volvo.

Just mark the original positions of the pot screw heads by scribing a mark on the circuit board. Then you can easily go back to square one.

Before you start messing with the injectors, try a moderate tweak. Say 1/4 turn clockwise on F pot(max boost) and then bump up P a little at a time until you start to surge past the max setting.

If you turn P up too much, you will get boost overrun and go past the max boost F setting. A 30 Degree clockwise turn on P pot(is about where you will begin to overrun the F setting(at 1/4 turn).

If you hit the knock sensor(pulsing boost drop at WOT), then back off F a bit and play with P so you don't overrun.

You can also modify the distributor vac/boost control by filing the boost stop down a thousandth of an inch at a time to get more spark retard under boost. This will delay the onset of engine knock and safely add more boost without hitting the knock sensor. The you set base timing to about 20 btdc for better off boost response.

With a 91, the only issue is that the AMM controls the fuel shut off rather than a separate pressure switch on earlier LH2.2 ECU's, so you can hit the fuel shut off if you tweak a bit too much. The way to overcome this is by putting in the 30lb injectors and adding a small +/-70 ohm resistor to the orange wire coming from the AMM. This fools the engine that there less air coming through the AMM so you don't get the fuel shut off.

Finally, I suggest you make sure base boost is between 5-6 psi. Lots of posts on how to do this.

Re cooling system leaks and hoses, I would get them from Jim at sobstory(site sponsor)800-583-0370. He doesn't sell any questionable parts and you will be sure you get the right parts for your year. Prices are basically the same as europarts. While radiator leaks are common at the side tanks, check your lower radiator hoseclamp and for pinhole leaks on the eblow bypass hose up near the thermostat. Sometimes these cause leaks that apper to be from the radiator. When you get a new thermostat get the 82 degree. Heat is not good for boost. Also to reduce boost knock, get the bcp7es or ev plugs, which are a one step cooler than the stock 6 heat range. Don't forget the 3.0fpr from n/a 900. Used is fine.
