As others have said. A glowing wire is not a litmus test for a functional AMM. Make sure that the idle switch will always click at idle and that it is not being held open. This is probably not it as it will probably die as opposed to idling high. If the ECU does not get an idle signal (ground on the appropriate pin), it will not engage the idle circitry (AIC adaptation) A dark CE light is also not corroborating anything either. Just read the LH FAQ and read the codes that are stored. It will probably show an idle adaptation fault. This will not always trip a CE light unless it is bad. Others are swearing it is an AMM. I am not so sure. I would bet on the AIC first. An AMM would show as drivability and/or starting issues which you say you do not have. Make sure you have a good ground as well. I think you checked this before, though. Battery cable ground connection to block should be cleaned as well as the FI ground on the head. to make sure that the FI system had a good ground reference.
