Did you completely remove the adjustment screw? If so, you can remove the belt, and flop the alternator back further towards the fender. To access that 12 mm AC/alt belt, I went to Sears & bought a 6 point, 12 mm flex socket in ¼" drive. This has a u-joint built in, then I use a 10" extension.
You must remove the alternator completely to remove the bushings.
When you put the bolt back, it's easier to remove the oil filter housing, andput the bolt in from the other side. If you ever have to remove the alternator again, you will thank yourself.
