"new" 89 tranny is mine!

What a day spent in the J yard this weekend pulling an 89 tranny to be attached to my 86 16VT engine. Saturday I spent an hour prepping the removal, a matter of ripping away the smashed front end pieces. It was late in the day when I did that and I planned to be there early in the morning so as to limit the amount of time someone else might have to jump on that engine before I get there. That's always a problem since you can't "claim" anything unless you're actually working on it.
Part of prepping on day two was pulling the axles, disconnecting the shift rod, undoing the mounts, removing or cutting cables and hoses, and draining fluids without making a mess. Draining the tranny fluid gave me the biggest surprise of the day. I expected oil, but got only water! What? How? Worried at first, it took me a while to figure it out: this car has been sitting in the J yard for over a month, and that month happened to be the wettest March we've had in over 20 years. It sat without a hood, and when I first checked it out I noticed the tranny oil dipstick and it's tube were loose. That is, someone had pulled the whole unit, then put it back in place, but not securely. I'll guess that happened in early March. So then came the heavy rains and drop by drop water ran down the dipstick, into the tranny and because oil floats, as the water level increased, all the oil washed out the dipstick opening on the side of the box.
The engine and box pulled free effortlessly and the disconnecting went smoothly. I spent some time removing the side and differential covers looking inside, rotating the primary gear, changing gears, looking for damage, listening for detectable trouble. Other than some slight surface rust on the differential gear (which wipes away with a rag), all looks good. I'm stoked! Killer price too! TBC...
