Especially if the brake lights are separate from the signal lights.
The signal lights operate by heating up a bimetallic strip in the flasher...if the LED's draw too little current the flasher won't work. some people use a loading resistor in parallel with the leds (most led replacments have their own current limiting resistors) to get a current that will operate the flasher...naturally this load resistor gets warm and loads the electrical system same as light bulbs...OTOH the load resistor doesn't heat up the lamp reflector.
One thing...the brake lights are designed to work in a given reflector...lots of the led replacements only shine straight back and are red, for example. So they will work in a red tail lamp (they work better in a clear lens) but will have a relatively small diameter signature. There are other replacement led clusters that shine to the side and even to the back so the stock reflector can give a bigger signature.
They are not cheap...can run $20 per side. I've chosen to wait and see if the prices go down. Although I did try to buy the instrument panel wedge bulbs to get better instrument panel lighting without melting the socket...they were out of stock so evidently they're in demand. Or crooked. Who knows.
