Coolant flush gone wrong?

I recently changed the alternator bushings and belts on my girlfriends 94 saab conv. Then the heater bypass broke so I replaced it. After checking on here and townsends I got ambitious and decided to flush the cooling system and get away from the green stuff.
I messed something up.
Now the car won't turn over. Well, it will but sounds real bad till it does, and then it won't run right. It also smells. I think I messed up with the flush (which I had never done before). Maybe I stuck the garden hose where I shouldn't have. I put it in the hose behind the AC compressor, then the overfill reservoir, and then in the top hose of the two hoses that head into the dash on the other side of the heater bypass. All of these were of course with the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator open.
When I went to fill with new coolant, I only got about three and a half quarts in before coolant started coming out the bleeder valve.
The was running fine before this debacle.
Anything at all would help. I don't know a lot about cars but I thought I could handle this. Guess not.
