You won't be able to get all the needed coolant in the engine until you get all the air out. When you add the coolant inevitably you will get air trapped. Run the engine up to operating temperature for a while then check your level. My guess is you'll find that you can add some then. A trick I do on my other car is to drill a 1/16" hole in the top of the thermostat. That lets air escape easier when filling and also helps to keep your head a little cooler than the block.
