If you place the ignition distributor way out of sync, the spark needs to fly a long way from from tip of rotor to each plug wire post and it might be that the spark decide to jump to the wrong plug wire.
You have a little notch cut out of the base of distributor. Place that notch in line with the split between valve cover and cylinder head with the notch facing the thermostat housing side.
No the timing degree is not adjustable without changing the set parameters inside the ignition computer (EZK box) and I have not really a clue how that is done except having the maker of the system do it.
