Because I put 87 vented onto my 82 non-vented, I can answer this. If his car is non-vented, those 87 calipers will work on your 86. If they are vented, they will work as well, so long as the 87 yokes are included with the 87 calipers. What doesn't work is fitting an 87 vented system (calipers, yoke, rotor) onto the non-vented older steering knuckle/hub. They bolt up alright, but the caliper body rubs against the rotor. The difference on the 87 steering knuckle is that some metal was added at the caliper/knuckle connection point so the caliper rides further toward the car interior to compensate for the slightly thicker rotor. In terms of engineering, it was appearantly less costly to add a nub of metal at that point on the knuckle cast molds than to redesign the calipers... which they ended up doing a year later anyway.
