Just replaced the plugs in my "new" '90 SPG. No one had the NGK plugs the owners manual and Bentley call for, so I went with the cross-reference at the car parts store. And now I'm confused. Here's why:

The owners manual and Bentley call for NGK 7EV plugs, which should be set to a 0.025" to 0.029" gap. But the "cross-ref" Bosch plugs come stock with a 0.044" gap, and when I set them down to about 0.030", the poor SPG idled on something less than 4 cylinders (about 3.5 to 3.75 cylinders' worth, I'd guess). But the roughish idle was at 850 rpm, where it belongs, and on stopping it drops right down to 850, as it should).

Slipped the plugs the car came with back in (also Bosch Supers, set to about 0.045") and the idle's fine. (Sorta - on decel, SPG eventually settles down to an 850 rpm idle, but does so stepwise: first the engine speed drops down to about 1100-1200, stays there 15 - 30 sec, then drops to 850. Otherwise fine.)

So what's going on? Is there a distinction between standard Turbo and SPG that the owners' manual and Bentley are missing? What plugs *should* a stock SPG be running, and set to what gap?
