I have an 89 900 which suffered the same problem.
The problem is a blocked coolant system and can be trouble-shooted as follows:
1.Remove the bottom hose on the radiator and flush hose water through the coolant tank until clean.
2.Temporary remove the thermostat.
3.Remove the heater hoses from the firewall and connect the ends together,
to skip the heater system entirely.
Start the engine and run normally. The car should no longer overheat, but
now you should immediately address the problem areas i.e.-new thermostat,
heater core, radiator replacement or cleaning.
