I don't think that I have your official Pensacola e-mail address. Click on my name up above and drop me an e-mail through Scott's message transfer.
The thing that really has me flummoxed is the 6-degree waver in the timing. If there wasn't anything funny going on with the distributor, it has to be someting with the timing chain or, God forbid, a loose cam sprocket.
When you checked the timing, am I safe to assume that you plugged the vacuum line to the advance/retard pot on the distributor so that vacuum fluctuations didn't do anything to the timing? When I do the timing, sometimes I forget, but my idle is pretty steady.
It's really easy to be a tooth off when setting the cam timing - even seasoned guys do it sometimes.
