Mysterious head gasket findings

Well, now I'm really stumped!
With the help of an assistant tonight, we took the final steps of removing the cylinder head from my 1990 Saab 900. (246k miles)
It had all the classic symptoms - bubbles in the coolant, steam from the exhaust, cappuccino oil, coolant loss, etc.
But the head gasket appears intact. Literally, I see no weak points, no areas broken down, etc. The only strange thing I see is that it appears some of the coolant passages were blocked in the head gasket with what appears to be a metallic substance (like someone might have used a block sealer of some sort- I've owned this car since 70,000 miles- I'm the second owner and I've seen to other evidence of engine problems up to this head gasket problem, nor did the previous owner and records reveal any issues when I bought the car in 1995).
I will try to take and post some pictures of the gasket, the engine block and the cylinder head (valve side).
I did find coolant in the #2 and #3 cylinders. 1 and 4, with engine at TDC, the pistons are up.
Also, with an 18" steel ruler, I don't see any significant warpage on the head nor the block. I'm not sure this is a reasonable guide.
So, what could be the cause of the problem, which appears to have been the head gasket, except that the gasket looks almost new?
Thanks for the anticipated help...
