Won't Crank....Not a peep.

I have a 1992 900S and I'm not very knowledgeable about cars. My problem is this. First of all, it started last spring when I bought the car. About a week after I bought it, it started overheating. I mean smoke and anti-freeze everywhere. Well, I was able to change the thermostat and that fixed the overheating problem. Then it started not cranking intermitting. I would drive to work, come out at the end of the day, and nothing. No er..er...er. No clicking sound nothing. Sometimes if I waited about an hour it would start. Sometimes if I waited for about 5 or 6 days it would start. So, me being the car genius that I am, I decided to change the starter. I went and bought a starter. Looked at how the old one was hooked up, and just hooked the new one up the same way. I also bought a new battery before the starter, but had the same problem (that's why I bought the starter). By the time I bought the starter, I had no sound coming from anywhere. Also, the lights and windows and everything else worked fine, just no crank.
So, I parked it for the winter and most of this summer, and just recently tried to start working on it again. Being the car genius that I am, I removed the fuel injectors (thinking they were the spark plugs), but put them back. What i would like is some help with some troubleshooting procedures. The whole point of me buying this car is to be able to work on it myself and to teach myself how to work on cars, but right now I'm getting an "F". What should I do next?
