I had the same problem with my '86 900S. I had the thermo-switch located on the upper driver's side of the radiator go; test it like the other post said to. The part to replace was like $10-15 bucks, get the 82 degree replacement if possible. I also had the time delay relay go, so I bypassed it by splicing the two primary wires together and removing the relay; now when the engine runs and reaches about 1/3 temp on the gauge, BOTH fans come on, and if the engine is off, just the one fan goes untill it gets below the temp setting on the thermo-switch. There is a SAAB technical bulletin out that covers this alteration for your car.
