I have to echo what RS said about the gearing. In a 5 speed, first gear is painfully short and you have to shift almost immediately into second. This takes time to do (with an older transmission) and you lose a little boost pressure in the process. Then you have to wind up 2nd gear in order to get to third gear, which is where the real speed comes on.
This isn't the case with the 3 speed auto box. In the auto, first gear really gets you going. But, as everyone knows, the gearing in the auto isn't so great for high speeds.
