I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're asking, but:

The forward position, near the shift lever turns the light on full-time.

The rear position, to back of car, turns on the "Timed Delay Light" setup. Light should go on when you open door, for about 20 seconds before going out. Unless you insert key and turn it to ON, or lock the car, or a bunch of other stuff, I think.

Center position turns light off full-time.

These switches go bad a lot. Some can be rescued, some cannot.
