I've just completed the single stroke wiper modification on my own 1988 900 SPG and have a few tips for people attempting it. First of all, let me thank CBraxton for a brilliant idea. I can tell you that it certainly removes one of the most annoying quirks of the car in the rain.
Given the nature of the continuum, nothing went smoothly, so my first bit of advice (should have known this from my years of putting computers together), is _always_ make sure things work before permanently mounting _anything_... or even _think_ about mounting anything. I was cocky enough to think that it would all work and had even zip-tied the wire down the stalk before I tested it and well... you can guess what happened.
1. The end of the stalk is in fact just a little black cover that pries right off, giving you access to the stalk cavity. This allowed me to almost flush mount the button, as it could be mounted and depthed properly. Be careful when drilling the square so that you don't crack it!
2. I don't think that the terminals specified in CBraxton's post are ideal. Looking at the schematic of the switch, it would seem that you would need to _disconnect_ 31b from 53a if you were attempting to simulate a regular wiper stroke. Anyway, connecting 53a with either 31b or 54 resulted in fuse #5 being instantaneously blown. I should note here that I already have the VW intermittant wiper relay installed, which is different from the stock Saab one... and probably routes the circuit a bit differently. CBraxton's caveat is still in force! Read your schematic! I settled on hooking the switch up to bridge 53a and I (the intermittant terminal) because that did not require 31b to be disconnected and is more "realistic" from the switch's point of view. Whatever... have a goodly supply of 15A fuses on hand!
3. There is a fair amount of current running through there (hence the huge wires coming out the back of the switch. Do _not_ hold your momentary switch down for any appreciable length of time. Ask me how I know...
So there you have the saga in three bullet points. I _highly_ worthwhile endeavour, especially if you live in the Pacific Northwet [sic].
