When we bought this car for our son two yrs ago, the driver's side e-brake lever was locked shut. It took a lot of force & spray lube to free it up, & then it never would actuate freely. (With the cable off, the lever's spindle was binding somewhere inside the caliper body.) So, I left the cable disconnected from that side of the car & he's been using only the passenger's side as a parking brake ever since.

This past week we put new tires on the car, & when they were done the tech told him his e-brake was sticking (it was fine on the way in to the shop). When he got home, I discovered that his one working lever was now sticking as well. (Same situation as the first one, with the lever's spindle binding inside the body.) I've left this one hooked up, but told him not to use it for parking any more.

After reading thru some of the posts about these older style calipers, I think I'm going to just buy some rebuilt ones rather than mess with rebuilding them myself. My concern is that the rebuilt ones don't seem to last more than a few years before the e-brake levers seize again. Is there some way to prolong the lever action?

My only other concern was the safety of using the current calipers. Since it's the e-brake levers that are sticking, it appears to me that the normal caliper functions are still OK. Am I correct in this, or is there some imminent failure ready to happen?
