Nathan- You can do a quick ground check on your alt. by using a good jumper cable to ground the case. First, set up a volt meter to measure the output of the alternator (where it hooks up to the starter is a good spot). Proper function should be > 13.5V. Then, hook one end of the jumper cable to the batt negative and touch the other end (same color) to the Alt case. If your Voltage suddenly goes up to the proper 13.5 or so, then, yes you need a new ground cable. I just went through this a month ago. I ended up buying a 20 inch 6 guage lawn tractor battery cable at Walmart for about $2. I picked the easiest spot I could find and actually have it grounded to the chassis rather than the engine. I am thinking that I would be better of with a ground point on the engine... but maybe when I have time.
