Geez Trogdor, would you really scrap an SPG because of a problem like that? I've always had a proper spring compressor to use so I'm just brainstorming here but... To slip the ball joint back in the upper control arm only needs to be about 3/4" above the sheet metal on which it's now resting. That's (about) the thickness of the spacers used to "block" the suspension when you replace ball joints, so you're not looking for a lot of movement. If the wheel is on the car and it's vertical then I would get two or three freinds to push down on the fender (put the hood up) and then you squeeze/reach in and slip a couple of large hex nuts or something under the upper control arm at the two points where it was hitting the sheetmetal (inner fender). Guys use old main bearing caps or anything for this blocking. I've used little pieces of hard maple wood, it doesn't take much. Once it's blocked you will be able to jack it up and slip the lower ball joint back in and bolt it. If not then probably something got bent. Of course if the wheel is splayed out (as I suspect) then you need to start by jacking up that corner, swinging the wheel in, maybe a little past vertical (ignore the lower ball joint for now) and then put the wheel back on terra firma. You'll have to make your own assessment as to whether the wheel will "kick out" when the fender is pushed down but on dry hard ground I'd try it. Otherwise I'd try to chock the wheel sideways using a curb or another vehicle and a 4X4 or whatever. Good luck. Let us know what happens.
