car keeps killing batteries.

My 900T convertible seems to be killing batteries. In the 3 years I have owned it, I have had to put batteries in it every winter. The batteries all fail the same way. They will hold a charge as long as the ambient temperature stays above 40 degrees, or if the underhood temp stays that warm. If the temp gets cooler, the battery looses it's charge to the point that it will only give one good crank before dying and needing a jump. Luckily, the car starts on the first crank every time, but if it's a little slow in cranking up, it will sometimes kill the battery before firing up.
I checked the running voltage, and the alternator seems to be putting out a good 13.8-13.6 volts. My heat shield is in place and seems to be in good condition too. The first battery was a nice Delco battery, but I started putting the cheap Advance Auto batteries in there until I can figure out what the heck is going on! I don't want to ruin a nice Optima battery or something like that!
