From what I understand, there were three different types of ATF cooling systems. The first one was through 1987 which had a cooler assembly (like the oil cooler) located on the passenger side with a thermostat on the crossmember between the transmission and the radiator. The thermostat was prone to failure and leakage and today is NLA. In '88 it was changed to the lower radiator style with no separate cooler. When I first heard about this style I thought it was rather funky too, but then I came to realize it was rather ingenious. The ATF is cooled/heated by the engine coolant and kept at a rather constant temperature. The last system came about sometime in the '90s and employed a cooler assembly with lines directly from the transmission with no thermostat.
My '87T had the first system and always leaked. In the winter season I also would have to wait 10 minutes for the ATF to heat up enough for the transmission to shift into gear. Last spring I switched over to the lower radiator hose style when the leakage became severe. I used a lower hoses from an '88 non-turbo (does not have the nipple for the water cooled turbo as mine is oil cooled). So far this winter I have always been able to start the car and drive off immediately. I believe this is because with the leakage gone, adequate pressure can build up inside the transmission and not bleed off where the leakage was.
The ATF is type F, do NOT use anything else.
