Boris88, Seen this before. Most likely thing is that he used the wrong reverse idler or reverse mainshaft gear. After model year '88 (so starting with '89) many parts and gears in the transaxle are subtly different and can not be interchanged. IF it's just the reverse idler gear that's wrong then it is possible to change it without pulling the unit from the car (but it's a real PIA). If he put the wrong reverse mainshaft gear in there then the unit must come out and be rebuilt. If he bought the gears new he could check the part numbers as early and late are different. Otherwise, there are tiny little ways to visually distinguish the early gears from the late ones. If you get to that point post back and I'll tell you what they are. Good luck.
