Just as CMyles says, judging from that you say you have a noise going backwards, it is a slight chance that the tech used the wrong combination of reverse gears.
A lot of time when rebuilding transmissions, the shop use good used parts from old transmission to keep the price down. But it is crucial to keep the old used part apart and labeled since the angle of the gears differs through the years. The gear with a different cut can easily be installed but when driving the car you will hear a whining noise either going forward or backward all depending what gear was mismatched
If that's the case and if lucky, the reverse idler gear can be replaced from removing the side and rear cover, but if it is the inner reverse gear, a full tear down is needed.
