lots of gunk in there after all these years, mine did the same thing before the switch just broke right off, had to start the car with a screwdriver. Rotted out right where the lock cylinder meshes with the gearset, got good one at the junker for about $9. New cylinder and key is better, but you have to carefully remove the old one without trashing the housing.
