Alternator giving up the ghost

It looks like my alternator has finally given up the ghost. Used to be, when you started my 88 900s, you had to blip the throttle to get the battery light off. No big deal, did it for years. Yesterday, it wouldn't go off until I hit about 2500 rpm. Then it came back on. Now, if you go below 3000 rpm, it comes on, sometimes going off if you rev to 4000+ rpm, sometimes not. Anyway, I'm sure it's the alternator, as when the light is on the wipers are slow (had to use them sparingly, it was raining) but when it's off they're normal. Same with lights, get brighter when it's off. (Obviously) So unless Saab has some other wundergizmo that I should be looking at, (and it wouldn't surprise me if they do) tomorrow I'm going to try and find a replacement alternator. My big question is this: I've done lots of work o n cars before, but this is my first Saab alternator replacement. Are there any hints you can give me to speed up the process? It looks straightforward enough, but some of the spaces I need to get a wrench into are a bit tight. Also, since I'm not planning on keeping the car a lot longer (242,000 miles) should I buy a new or used alternator, and does anyone have a ballpark figure as to how much they may be? Thanks and sorry for the rambling.
Mike
