My son's Aero had peeling clearcoat on the hood, so we repainted it this summer. By the time we got a good hvlp gun and all the mats, we were probably out $500. I already had a compressor. Then we took 3 days to sand to primer, touchup primer, do all the wet sanding, spray the finish coat and put on the clear coat. We did all this outside in the back yard with no booth.
It looks very good. We did get some air-borne grit in the finish but its not really noticeable. Fortunately, there arent many bugs in the SF Bay Area. Everything was pretty routine, except for the clear coat. (You are supposed to clearcoat metallics) Your respirator won't stop clear coat, it is not an organic vapor, it is an isocyanate, just like super glue. Real nasty stuff. I won't shoot it again unless I have a booth to suck it up.
I liked the regular prep and spraying the finish. I would do it again. I am going to respray my work van this summer with a solid coat paint. But I will just wax for the finish coat. Like I said, clear coat is nasty.
