The old style timing lights did not use an incandescent bulb - they typically used Xenon flash bulbs. A high voltage is produced, discharging through the Xenon gas, producing a flash. This is the same technology used for photographic flashes, which have very little delay. They also provide a nice, bright flash.
With the advent of high output LEDs I can see folks going to them for cost, and above all, ruggedness. A Xenon bulb is somewhat fragile. However, I doubt that there is a performance difference between the classic flash-tube style and LED timing lights. Or enough to make any difference. Given the fact that the number of cars with adjustable timing is very small, chances are good that you'll not be getting tons of use from a new timing light. If your old one works, keep it, and save the money for some other tool.
