To properly check Saab ball joints, you need to put spacer between the upper arm and the body. It's a 3/4" to 1" steel spacer that I use. I suspect the ball joint(s) as being bad and it's about a 1 hour job per side. Another area to check is the tie rod ends, but this does not require any special spacers and your mechanic may have checked these. Tell us how you make out.
