Okay, looks like I figured out the hard way that the turn signals are different from the older 900's to my 1990. From looking at the schematics of the turn signal lever, the car I pulled it from was probably a 1987. so I am wondering if there's any electronic differences in the fuel level sending unit too. I took the fuel sender out of the same junked car. This older style fuel sender has a different style connector on it than mine, so I cut off the large 3 round pin connector and soldered on the smaller, squarish connector with the flat pins, and again, soldered together using the same color code.
That stupid plastic ring would NOT budge on my car. I ended up having to grind and cut a large portion of it away with the dremel too, and then I was able to finally get it to turn an come out. My plastic fuel sender was in pieces in there, but they all came out. Luckily, I also salvaged the ring to re-install the replacement sender too...this time, I hand tightened it! I wish the one on MY car was originally hang tightened just like the one on the junked car was!
Anyways, with the replacement fuel sender connected up, It's still not working. I checked my fuel gauge with a resistor subsitution box, and found that 60 ohms produces an empty reading, 47 ohms, a 1/4 reading, 33 ohms is 1/2, and 15 ohms was 3/4 tank. Full was zero ohms. Does this sound correct? When I measured the output from between the black and gray wires of the replacement sender, I am getting 87 ohms. The car has approx 1/2 a tank of fuel in it. Are the older sending units calibrated differently, or is the only electrical difference the different style connector? I'd much rather use the older style fuel sender if at all possible, since it appears to be build better than the newer plastic ones.
I am thinking I just ended up with another bad sender. If that's the case, I'll just buy a brand new one from a site sponsor. I want to buy the older style sending unit though because I've already changed the connector, and they are cheaper in price, and look to be built better. I am reluctant to buy an older one though if they are electrically different.
