It's not wheel bearing noise; I've just started to get that and it's hardly noticeable.
It's not tire noise; the Nokians do have a little bit of it (Hakka 2s) but the noise has been the same regardless of what 185/65 tire I use.
It's the typical pinionish noise- 48-53 miles an hour, only under load, and it gets a little worse when the outside temperature is over 60 or so. The noise is absent while coasting. It's very quiet in third and fourth, then it makes all the noise in fifth.
Did I hear something about the bearing cup seat shims or some sort of preload setup in there? I would be really, really, really happy if this was the same noise coming from something *adjustable* like that.
How do you replace the inner drivers without messing up the internals? Something like only having one out at a time? Although the inner drivers are original, there's plenty of grease swimming around from when I put the transmission in.
I figured I'd ask on this one because it's really the only thing standing behind now (201k) and even higher mileage (I mean 250+).
I DO NOT put a lot of torque through this box, but every once in a while you've got to get up a hill. It's an 8 valver so the gearbox is handling only a modest amount of torque. Let the record show that I am absolutely thrilled with the car; absent a sudden loss of oil pressure or something like that I'm going to drive her until the rust finally does her in. Recent inspection of the lower A-arm points and floorpan and jacking points- hardly any rust at all, if any. My only concern is that I've just moved and there aren't any junkyards around here with 900s in them; they all rusted away years ago.
Thanks for the guesses. Let's keep on guessing.
