Replace front engine/tranny mount: 1986 non-Turbo??

I’m going nuts on this. The rubber-lined cylinder, which is the upper part of the front engine mount assembly appears OK itself, but the bracket by which it is attached to the frame --with a long T50 torx-head bolt-- failed on both sides, with both left and right flanges having broken clean off. I backed the bolt OK out of the threaded section of the lower bracket but I don’t see sufficient clearance for the head of the horizontal main bolt to be driven sideways through the built-up tab on the car frame to which the front mount assembly itself was fixed (by a pair of smaller vertical bolts, through the failed bracket flanges).
The vertical steel C-clamp which attaches the rubber-core cylinder to the front of the transmission is affixed by an upper bolt which is easily accessible and a lower bolt, which is obstructed by the radiator. The cylinder rubber seems OK and if I could drive the main bolt out sideways, I think I could just replace the lower bracket easily enough.
Dana Arenius described the repair method on his posting here of 18 February 2006, but it isn’t clear enough. Neither is the Haynes SAAB 900 manual. Can anybody take me by the hand a little further on this?
