I was thinking about it and there's some possibility that, when the chain broke, it might have wrapped around the crank sprocket and cracked the aluminum part fo the case.
It takes a lot to break the double chain, so a used engine would be a possibility. If the head on this one is still good, keep it as a spare (the 8-valve engines have a history of head cracks.)
