put a new one in. It's not easy to replace with the engine in the car.
A friend had a timing chain go south on his '90 900S (he was up in Vermont, so it means a lot for it to go south :-) It was towed to a big shop nearby. The shop owner took on the project himself, saying "I never get to have any fun anymore." And he developed a way to replace the chain with the engine in the car.
Sad to say, it's a matter of economics vs loving the car. I can't give you a rough cost for the timing chain replacement, but a guess is that it's probably near or over the book value of the car. But the value of the transportation provided by the car is probably in line with the work, providing nothing else is about to want a major cash infusion.
