I own a '93 TC and like it a lot even with the automatic. I also have a '98 900SE and quite honestly the NG900's are smoother, faster, quieter and really function better as a car in every way. But I suspect that isn't why you're buying it. For "character" nothing beats the classic CV, not to mention the fact they much more rare and could conceivably begin to appreciate in value in the not too distant future. If you decide to go the NG900 route I would try for at least a '97 and up as they were continually improved.
