As Ari correctly illustrated:
I turn on the car, and the ABS and Brake Fluid lights are ON. The ABS pump is NOT running. I have NO power assist to my brakes, whether I'm stationary or moving (it's more noticeable/scary when I'm moving).
After about 30-60 seconds, the ABS pump starts to run. I have power assist after maybe 5 seconds of buzzing. After about 15-30 seconds, the lights go out.
After an additional 15-30 seconds, the pump stops running.

I'm pretty sure (99%) it IS the pump I'm hearing, since, once it's buzzing, it coincides with the power assist, then lights out, then it stops. (Just like if it started right away, right?) It's about 80°F in the garage right now, & testing it the way you suggested, I can't hear the pump running over the engine. But I CAN see the fluid level drop. I think the pump started about 10 seconds after I started the car, then ran for 40 seconds before it shut off. I'll try it again tomorrow morning when it's colder & see what I get.

The RPM drop is minimal. It's not enough to register on the tach, but you can tell by the engine sound that the pump is causing just the slightest drop in RPMs. It coincides exactly with the start & stop of the buzz.

Ari: I do have both the headlights & the interior fan on right now when I start the car. I usually turn the lights off with daylight savings time, but I forgot until you mentioned it. I run the fan 24/7/365, but I'll turn that off tonight for tomorrow morning's startup.

Anders: I replaced the accumulator at the end of this past summer ('05) due to summer heat related ABS lights. Also, I was only getting about 5 pumps before the light would come on, but after replacement I got about 15 pumps. I used the GM part that Stephen identified via the Buick Riatta group. It's been working great for the rest of last summer & all thru autumn & winter. I think still get about 15 pumps now, once the everything's up to pressure, but maybe I should give this another test.

Since I only get one try in the morning, is it better to time it the way I've been experiencing it, or to just use the key-on method without starting the car?

Thanks to both of you for helping me out on this one!
