8v lpt or engine swap? (long)

I finaly got hold of a doner car for my 88 900i 5 speed (8v) to do the turbo upgrade but Im unsure which way to go and would like to hear from anyone who has tried these options. The parts car is a rusted out 82 900 5 door auto. It runs well and has 230 km on the clock, it is not intercooled. The first option would be to convert mine to a LPT by swaping all the turbo bits over (including the cillinder head) and eventuly adding an intercooler, I know the turbo engine had lower compression so I wouldn't be able to run as much boost. The other option would be to pull the engine, disconect the auto transmision and plug in my 5-speed, then place them both in my car. As you see option two is considerably more work and if I can get a similar result from the LPT I'm not going to waste the time. My curent engine is in good condition and the gear box was rebuilt 20'000 km ago.
If I do the LPT, istall an intercooler and water injection, with a dual stage boost controler so I'm only using the extra boost ocasanly in good (coold) weather, I suspect, I can run similar boost and therefore similer power to the full turbo engine. I'm not looking for stupid power levels but 160 - 180 bhp would be nice.
