$500 - $1000: Saab 99 or 900? Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Tue, 9 May 2006 08:32:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have experience working on a beat up 85 900T 4 door that a friend had purchased for $65. It finally rusted through and the passenger side control arm ripped right out of the subframe from rust rot when a friend hit the brakes too hard. No one was hurt! This was a over a year ago and it was a sad day.
I am interested in getting back in the "get an older neglected car going again" world. Here are my current leads:
76 99 2 door hatch: western state so body seems good. engine/trans seem ok, having been re-worked to some degree (not "rebuilt" but at least re-sealed, etc.)
78 99 5 door converted to manual trans. body seems decent, but trans is leaking. Also has some issues regarding front hub assembly leaving it un-drivable at current time.
85 900T 4 door: currently doesn't start, but owner says it is probably just fuel related and it may need a fuel pump. From MN, so a bit rusty, but not too bad.
Here is the thing: all 3 owners say "engine/trans good!", but I know that any of the 3 could have major components fail at any time.
Do you guys have any advice on whether or not to venture into the 99 world or stay with a 900? The 99's are appealing, but for the same money I could get set up with a similar or better condition 900.
Thanks for any input,
iveand
