I would go about tracking down the problem thinking they are unrelated.
For coolant system:
find the leak
check the fans to make sure they are working
check the thermostat - sometimes the just fail when you flush the system
you can do this all at the same time.
Fill with water - start - look for water - put hand on upper rad hose until it's hot (t-stat working) - wait for fans.
I would think, the fans or the t-stat failed and then you got a leak.
Trans leak is probably fron the cool as most people don't replace the o-rings or forget them all together. The pan gaskets are cheap and easy to get to - you just have to work around the cross member.
Let us know and I'll post if I come up with anything else.
