Re: Anders, about that locking-up caliper and flex hose Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Wed, 17 May 2006 08:31:11 In Reply to: Anders, about that locking-up caliper and flex hose>>>, Joe98, Wed, 17 May 2006 06:57:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
What happens with the flex hoses is that the rubber inside swell for some or another reason.
The hole through the inside is very small to begin with, just about the size (or less) of the inside diameter of the metal tubing even though the flex hose is pretty bulky on the outside.
Wrong or old fluid can deteriorate the rubber inside so that it swells up. Since it can't expand outwards due to the heavy thickness of the flexhose, it start to shrink down on the inside diameter to the point where the hole is completly closed off.
The brute force of the master cylinder can easily push fluid out to the caliper but when the fluid try to flow back to the master cylinder it is effectively stopped by the closed off flex hose.
I'm basing my answer on that you say you have had this problem for two years prior to replacing the caliper. So that's why I think it is something else than a bad caliper.
