Lifetime warranties - there is no such thing Posted by Saabpilot [Email] (#134) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabpilot) on Fri, 9 Jun 2006 14:55:48 In Reply to: Yeah, so much for lifetime warranty., HairBear formerly JohnB, Fri, 9 Jun 2006 14:23:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
At least not legally in many areas including Ohio where I live.
The mere term begs the question - whose lifetime? Yours? The cars? The part they sold you? I used to compete against a company that offered lifetime warranties on products we both sold to public entities (fire departments) and it is a total marketing move that is completely unenforcable and undefinable.
For example, if the part you've purchased has a "lifetime" warranty and it breaks 10 minutes after you purchased it, then well, it's "lifetime" was 10 minutes and you have no claim. The argument I always made on the point of whose lifetime is if it is sold to a corporation or public entity, theoretically that organization will never die even though the members change, so therefore the lifetime warranty would literally have to last until the end of time unless the purchasing organization was disbanded before then. This all may sound academic but I saw the company offering this lifetime warranty hedge on it time and time and time again.
Since this experience in business I have never accepted a "lifetime warranty" on any product or service as being valid. No one should.
Sorry, didn't mean to pontificate so much but I just wanted to let everyone know that there really is no such thing.
