That's silly money for a 17 year old car.
But I turn my own wrenchs and hit the salvage yard every month or so.
I'm lucky to have two spares :)
I think you need three wrenches (maybe only two) and a allen wrench to R&R the compressor and two big adjustables to R&R the receiver/dryer.

If it wasn't leaking, then don't bother with the hoses. All you really need is the receiver dryer, new o-rings, have someone draw a vacuum on it and refill.

Someone mentioned
enviro-safe refrigerant - they say it cools as good if not better then R12 and isn't nasty like R12 or R134.

If you do the wrench turning an AC place would probably charge about $100 (so $200 in CA money) to suck it down and refill.
