Sounds like a cable problem. You might get lucky and only have a loose connection. Remove left speaker and looking through the windshield you can see where the cable connects to the back of the instrument cluster. If not connected, reach into the hole and reconnect. I'd lube the cable befor replacing. They make a special graphite cable lube, but I usually jsust squirt some spray lube in. Get one of the spray lube cans with the red plastic tube so you can direct the spray into the cable
If connected, pull the plug out and check out the inner cable. It should not turn. If it spins freely, the gear at the bottom of the cable is likely broken or the connection to the trans/dif case has backed out.
Raise the car and crawl under to get to the bottom of the cable at the on the side of the trans case near the firewall. Unscrew the cable fastener and inspect the end of the cable and gear. If the gear is chewed up, you need a new cable. The cable can be snaked in from the bottom.
These cables can fail if they are not lubricated every couple of years. First symptoms are a jumpy speedometer. Usually some lube will free it up. Once they get too stiff, the gear at the bottom can break. I suppose the cable can snap, too.
Not a bad DIY task.
