Ok, lets assume you have no knowledge of a Saab AC system and just want to replace everything and have a whole new system. Let's reveiw the prices using a sponsor's quoted prices
$349.50 Rebuilt Compressor
$34.90 Receiver/Dryer
$24.90 Expansion Valve
$129.50 Condensor
$22.90 AntiFrost switch (rarely goes bad)
$119.80 Hoses
$681.50 total parts
$225. New vacuum pump
$60. Gauge set for R12
$55 for 4 cans Freeze 12
$25 various for orings & oil
$1046.50 total with a brand new vacuum pump & guages, for do it yourself. You can resell the vacuum pump & guages, and this is an extreme example. It would be nice if we could share the costs of the tools collectively here, and just ship to each other as needed.
Anyone who charges $1400 is a highway robber, taking advantage of the ingnorance of air conditioning. I'm sure they are not replacing all the components. A compressor can be had cheaper through eBay. I think around $180. The labor involved, for most AC techs, is hooking up the vacuum, and waiting an hour, then hooking up the guage set, and installing freon.
