Vvack, In '86 the tripod bearing roller diameter was increased to 37 mm and the companion flange 'gaps' were appropriately increased. It's impossible to push a post '86 (large) tripod bearing into a pre '86 (small) c. flange BUT it is possible to insert a pre '86 (small) tripod bearing into a post '86 (large) c. flange. If that is done there will be a huge amount of slop between the two parts (and probably massive vibration while accelerating). What used to happen with some frequency was that guys would replace the c. flange(s) (aka. "inner driver" or "stub axle") on a pre '86 car with a new one without being aware of the change in dimensions. The unchanged, smaller tripod bearing would then flap around in the new c. flange until something broke. Also, in a post '86 car someone could fit salvaged axles from a pre '86 wreck and unknowingly slip small tripod bearings into large c. flanges. If you have an old scrap driver slice the tin shield off and you'll see the o'ring and such. Good luck.
