this is whats happening
when looking at a driver (out of a car) the shaft runs to the back plate of the cup and is attached verywell but then following the back plate up to the edge where it makes the bend to form the cup, thats the edge thats separated,
now when its in the car the boot is attached to one side of the cup and on the edge where it bends (making the back plate) theres a separation
which allows all the cv joint grease to excape from.
makes me feel alot better that this seems such a rare case, ill buy another driver and install it,
my passenger side driver i bought from eEuroparts looked different than the one i took out of the car. e-Euro looked to be one solid cup and back plate (to shaft),
i see you said some cups spin, my spining cup has a gate-way for cv joint grease to flow out the back, the only thing the boot was good for was not letting dirt in.
whats worse i have no clue how long it has been with out grease, im sure the cv bearing is trashed,
i was feeling a little vibration on take off and just thought it was the passenger side with the busted cup, (cup walls to backplate separation gap was huge)
after i repared the passengerside i thought great i`ll get in and drive around, i found the vibration still there, was thinking perhaps outter cv.
thats when i found it today, drivers side is same way just not as huge as gap as the passenger-side
im sure the bearing is toast,
however you saying that you never seen a busted cup, and in having to have me explain it better only makes me feel at ease that this dose not happen (sounds like at all)

i was shocked when the passenger side was busted, i guess im just ticked seeing the drivers is the same way, car must of been someones pet project.
